Chapter 554
“...Oh yea. So Sharon, why are you looking for a job now? What about Hayward?” ask Gerald. Even though she used to have a crush on him, she no longer had any feelings for him.
“Ah, well, after Hayward finds out that you are Mr. Crawford, he was so shocked that he refused to leave his house for days. Besides, she knows about our past relationship, so..”.
Sharon stopped there and let her sentence hang.
'...Ah, so Sharon is looking for a job partly because of me!' Gerald thought to himself.
Gerald then revealed an awkward smile before saying, “But you know, I'm still really flattered, haha! Remember back in high school? The best birthday I have ever had was in the cafeteria!”
Hearing that, both Sharon and Xella began to reminisce. During high school, almost everyone refused to hang out with Gerald, and his birthday did not change that fact.
His birthday that year was on the results day, and everyone had to go back to high school during the holidays to get their certificate. It was Xella and Sharon who suggested that they celebrate Gerald's birthday in the cafeteria. They wanted to celebrate with him before he joined the military.
The two girls, along with Lilian, had bought a big cake for Gerald back then. Lilian had been there ever since she was close to Sharon and although she was a little hesitant at first, she still celebrated her birthday with him.
It was the first time Gerald had eaten a cake, and he felt very touched. It was then that he decided to remain friends with them for good.
Now, however, he realized how heavy the decision was
Two years later, Gerald is excited when he meets Sharon at Mayberry. Sharon had to admit that since she was still very friendly and talkative, she obviously valued their friendship very much even after so much time had passed.
However, Sharon was embarrassed to be around him, so she avoided him at all costs. He even insulted her a few times! There were times when he went overboard as well, resulting in him being physically injured.
Despite all that, Gerald continues to help her on several occasions and she doesn't even hold a grudge against him. He had taken advantage of it, which caused Gerald to get even more hurt. This was why Gerald finally started to act cold to her.
As for Xella, she had looked down on him ever since they met again after so many years. He was a little embarrassed when they met, so he just spoke politely to her, even making some light jokes here and there.
However, Gerald still thinks that he values their friendship just as much as he did back then. They were even supposed to go to a class reunion together! However, he left with Waylon instead which resulted in him feeling uncomfortable for most of the day.
Waylon had bullied Gerald a lot in high school. Gerald never defended himself. There was even a time when Waylon threw a chair at Gerald that made him fly to the back of the classroom. No doubt he is Gerald's nemesis.
Despite being aware of that, Xella kept approaching him. Gerald was deeply hurt after learning of it.
Now that the two girls realize that Gerald is the real Mr. Crawford of Mayberry, they can't help but regret their actions. Both thought that he was no longer the Gerald they knew, when in reality Gerald never changed. They are the ones who have changed.
