...—2th April, D173 | Little City of Eden, Emiliel Holy Kingdom—...
The WORLD is a cruel place. Nueva understood that as well as he understood the difference between fire and water. She was only ten, almost eleven, but Nueva considered herself more mature than the majority of adults. Living in exhaustion does have the effect of maturing a person, and pain makes people stronger.
Nueva's understanding of this rotten world was mainly due to what he saw throughout the Little City of Eden. Theft. Seizing. Thuggish. Corruptions. Rape. Distribution of illegal products. Concealed slavery. Blatant prostitution in broad daylight. High-handedness. There is no justice except for those who are rich and powerful. Think of a crime, and Nueva believes it can be found in the Little City of Eden.
Indeed, he did not live in this city. Nueva lives alone with her mother in Ceassa Village, the village closest to the city. However, in addition to the seventh day of each week, Nueva has been in the city from sunrise to sunset since she was eight years old. It is more than worth judging and concluding. Moreover, he saw with his own eyes that the head soldier received bribes from the mayor to be on his side.
And Nueva's assessment, this world is a rotten place—not different from the city where he works.
“Nueva!”
Nueva—, who was busy condemning the decay of the world while making abstract lines on the ground, immediately stood up and rushed to the owner of the voice.
“This is your payment this week,” said the farm owner while handing over a small bag of coins. “Good work, Nueva. Defend. You're better than the adult workers. If it continues like this, in two or three years I can make you my assistant.”
“Thank you, Boss.” Nueva received the money bag with pleasure. “I will keep trying to be better.”
The ranch owner nodded and patted Nueva's shoulders softly. “Now hurry home, don't make your mother worry.”
Thanking you once again, Nueva left immediately. He ran quickly out of the work area. Going in and out requires paying two pieces of copper for non-permanent residents of the city. Nueva is no exception. Although he was in and out of the city every day, the gatekeepers still withdrew money from him, and Nueva had no choice.
The distance of the village where he lived with the city was only about two kilometers. With a light run, Nueva was able to travel that distance in less than twenty minutes. However, as today he received the wages, Nueva ran at full speed. He immediately handed the money to his mother.
In just eight minutes, Nueva arrived at the village where she lives ‒ a small village that only has a total of 71 houses. Nueva ran to her house with a smile.
However, that smile instantly faded away upon seeing three men standing before his house.
“It's good that you're home,” said one of them. “We just came in and forced your mother to pay. Although he was blind and sick, he could still be sold as a slave. Now, pay your father's debt. That bastard is troublesome indeed, you must be disgusted to have him as a father, right? Lucky for you because he's dead.”
“...Last week I paid, you should come next week.” Nueva tried hard to stay calm. “Now we have no money to post, please bill next week.”
“Bocah,” firmly other men. “Over this time we have been good, but now our situation is also precarious. If you don't want to pay, we'll take your mother. If he can't be made into a prostitution worker after getting treatment, we'll sell him as a slave or even kill him and sell his organs to necromance witches.”
Nueva cursed her father inwardly. That damn man is poison to him and his mother. He did not understand how his mother could end up with the drunken bastard, the playwright, and the debtor. If she was still alive, Nueva herself would have slit her throat while she slept. It was fortunate that he was dead, so he did not need to dirty his hands.
Nueva also cursed the three men before her. He understood that they were just messengers; they did what their boss told them to. However, Nueva could not forgive the three for threatening her mother. If he had the power, Nueva would kill them right now. Unfortunately, Nueva had no money to pay people to teach her magic. He has no power.
Pun Nueva could not expect help from the villagers. The majority of them hated their father, some of them thought that his mother was a curse-bearer because of her illness; it was a miracle if they would help. Nueva and her mother were still allowed to live in the village because the village chief was a distant relative of her mother. If not, Nueva doesn't know how it will be.
“Child, I'm still kind because I have a kid your age. Give me all the money you have, and you'll be fine.”
Nueva clenched her teeth, tossing the bag of money she had earned from her six-day milking of sheep. “Now get away from here,” hisses with a body that shakes due to holding back anger.
“You are an amazing child, it's a shame you have to be born from two useless parents. When your mother dies, come see us. The boss will be happy to hire you. The boss's younger sister has an interest in boys, I'm sure if she sees you she will instantly make you her special servant.”
With that last message, the three debt collectors immediately stepped away. One of them patted his shoulder slowly, but Nueva quickly brushed the hand away. Hating the three of them, Nueva happily makes them understand that.
This blonde child did not enter the house immediately after the three debt collectors completely disappeared. He stood on the spot for a few minutes, trying hard to suppress his anger and make his body relax. His mother was blind, but she was very sensitive. Nueva was worried her mother would know if she did not suppress her anger as best she could.
It was only after the calm returned that Nueva stepped towards the door. “Mother, Nueva home!” he shouted while knocking on the door.
The door opened ten seconds later. The charming smile on her mother's frail face was what welcomed Nueva. His mother was blind, but he broke the house. His mother's body was indeed weak, but he also needed to move so that his body would not stiffen. The burns on his face and left side of his body were indeed frightening and disgusting in the eyes of others. But—
“Nueva home, Mom.”
—Nueva did not hesitate to hug her mother. He did not even care if his mother's lung disease can be transmitted to him as claimed by some residents. Nueva really doesn't care. Only his mother is the one he has. He will take care of her, protect her. His place is only on his mother's side. There is no other meaning in Nueva's life.
“Did anyone have been outside?”
“Oh, it was just a passerby asking for an address. I don't have to worry. Now we better get in.”
