I woke up on a cot in a dark, narrow room, and every inch of my body hurt. I raised my head, trying to grit my teeth so as not to groan. Something happened, something bad, and I don't remember—in my head there was a voice as dark as night saying; Hello, Amelia.
I sat down so fast that the blood roared to my head, and it took me a while before I could see again. After being able to do so, cold sweat sprung up on my back while staring around.
A room that is no more than five steps wide. Stone wall. There was no window open to the outside, only a door with a small window with bars, and from there came the light of a square-shaped pompal torch that emanated above the room.
“ Hello?” I said doubt.
No one answered.
“ Hello?” I called louder. “ Please whoever my— is trapped! Anyone, please, help me!”
Again, it doesn't sound anything. I stood up, staggered towards the door, but it turned out that on this side there was no handle. I touched the door, reaching for a spell similar to the one I used on the door of the tomb at Siderros. But my magic was stuck inside me, blocked by something I didn't do. I called out to him again, trembling, and I still couldn't summon him to the surface. So I pushed the door around until my hand hurt as it kept hitting it, and didn't manage to shift the door one bit. The barred windows did not offer any help. With my tiptoes I could see a little small silver light in the hallway, but that was it.
“ Please,” I whispered as I slumped slowly in front of the door and landed on the floor. “ Please.”
Not even a mouse answered me.
I don't know how long I've waited in that cramped room. Men in grey uniforms, swords hanging from their belts, opened the door and entered six times. Every time they came they left the food tray, and emptied the toilet bucket that was in the corner. They didn't talk to me, even when I leaned them in with no questions, and I ended up just curled up on the couch, staring at them. I didn't even try to use any spells; my magic was clearly blocked, as unexpected to me as the outside of the door.
At first my mind just rotated in place. What did I hear calling us from the woods really Devan? It sounds like Devan, and I can recognize his voice anywhere. But Devan said he wouldn't help me, he was worried something like this would happen to me, and wouldn't watch it. And of course Devan was mad at me for the spell I cast on him, too angry to forgive me that easily. I saw the expression that came from his eyes when I realized what I had just done, and his expression showed a feeling of betrayal. However, after all that, did Devan change his mind and still catch up with me?
Did Bella manage to escape, with or without Devan? Bella must have known the forest, maybe she knew of a place she could hide from Melani and her men. Had Devan been with Bella, would Devan have tried to bring her back to town? The spell I put up must have been broken when I found Bella, so Devan could tell the king and queen everything that happened. Or are they both trapped like me? Should I knock on the wall, as the people in the story do, and hope one of them knocks back?
