I didn't recognize any of them, so I put on a calm expression and walked over to the gate.
“ I came with a message for the son of Earl Of Rithia,”. “ From the family of witches Paula Sovrit.” That's right, now I'm part of Paula's family. “ But I... I don't need to deliver the mail directly.”
The guard nodded and flicked a finger over the gate of the guard post that was right inside the gate. “ Elon,” call it. A young errand boy came out of the building while running slowly, his yellow hair swaying over his forehead.“ Send this girl a message to Devan Dulchessy. Maybe you can find him at his house. Lately he just came out at night.”
The messenger nodded and reached out asking for his message. My esophagus felt stiff as I put the message over his hand. Then the messenger left, rushing towards the palace. I smiled weakly at the guards, nodded my head in gratitude, & returned to G district.
Goldhorn Park is a public park funded by donations from district residents who hope to one day be able to match the parks in the shappire. The park is not crowded, because it was midday and the weather was getting hotter. Upon entering the park I looked around looking for a place to sit, a place that allowed me to see Devan before he saw me. A bench is located in front of a tree with dangling branches. It seems like a good place, so I sat down, and waited, and kept waiting.
During my wait, the sun moved slowly across the sky, sometimes a cloud blocked it, but generally the sun just drove west tirelessly, shining water on a lake nearby and & makes my eyes glare. My ass is numb from sitting on a stone bench, but I've been through years that require me to sit for long periods throughout long state events, & I couldn't even change positions more comfortably. At first I was wondering about Devan and the bodyguard's words.
The night before I was determined to wait until sunset, but now it seems like an uphill battle that deserves to be a song. Maybe I should stand up and walk. Maybe Devan has come but is waiting in another part of the park, and if I don't find him soon, he'll leave. Yeah, break me up, I'm gonna go find Devan. But when I pressed the bench to help me stand up, I saw it.
Devan walked slowly, glancing right left & occasionally back. A fancy green tunic that I recognized as one of the gifts Devan's parents gave her on her last birthday was matched with light brown pants. His hair looked darker because it was wet, as if it had just been shampooed, and combed back, but it had started to wavy around his ears.
It was at that moment that Devan saw me, in a silly position half-dropped to his feet. Devan walked up to me, but then looked doubtful, and the doubt almost broke my heart in two. Before I realized what I was doing, I got up from the bench and went madly across the grass to Devan.
