We had to hurry up to the city before the event, but we also had to avoid the highway. As much as possible we were in the forest, then we crossed the farmland, following the tracks that the farmers used to inspect their fields. There was no time for long conversations, and at night we almost collapsed to the ground so tired. So I just heard the story of Devan and Bella a little bit, when we had to lead the horse or stop to eat and rest.
On the first night of the day they ran into the forest, Bella led the way through the path of the familiar animal and Devan followed behind her. There was a cave not far from Bella's house, and they hid there for more than a day, fearing that Melani's guards were still searching the forest. After that, Devan went to March Holdings to buy food and see things around. Devan hoped that the soldiers would not see him that night, but he did not linger in the place for fear that they were looking for a stranger. But Devan managed to gather information that a villager, whose house was closest to the road that leads to Puri Sare, saw a squad of soldiers who led the mansion, along with the baroness.
Just like me, they didn't really expect me to go out on my own either. So one night they sneaked closer to the house, and together they devised a plan to ignite the fire and tried to push me out.
“ I almost turned it down,” Devan told me. “ What if Melani leaves you in a chained state, and we kill you instead? But then I thought, if Melani wanted you dead, she would have killed you outside Bela's house, so she would have protected you from the fire. So we did it. I went to a nearby village and bought some food for supplies on the way, and a little mintak, pretending to be a lamp. We rolled up my cloak like a ball and dipped most of it in oil, burned it, and threw it into the stables from the top of the wall.” Devan shook his head. “ But I didn't expect the fire to be that big.
