“ The witches. A very powerful witch. Head of campus and his successor's main candidate.” Devan groaned, then leaned his head against the side of my bed. “ Well, you know them better than I do. Which do you think?”
I have asked that question myself. However, Devan's speech was a little too optimistic. I don't really know either. Melani, a baroness, had died years ago, so she attended court events and sat in council in her husband's place.
He's always been polite to me, but generally I just look at him from a prank. But he always made me feel weird when he looked at me, as if he could read my mind. Melani is beautiful, icy cold, so beautiful that it makes me feel even more awkward and shy every time I see her. I never met him, other than that probing gaze, and he never showed any interest in me.
And Omar, despite being the king's and queen's adviser on witchcraft, spent more time on campus. He was always too busy to do more than just nod to greet me, rarely even looking me in the eye. It seems like both of them, to date, do not look like candidates for coup plotters.
But, shivering my mind, Omar would not tell Paula about her spell. Wh why?
because she was afraid, if she really understood it, Paula could figure out her plan? Might as well. And Omar wants Paula to report my magic progress, to watch me. Does that have anything to do with all this? Despite that, no one could explain why she wanted to place Riana on the throne instead of the real Diana.
I sighed and rubbed the temple. I was tired after all night of translating, and my mind felt like it was crossing thick mud. “ I don't know,” I said. “ But we have to do something. I can't go to Melani, she doesn't have a fixed room on campus. But you can watch him, maybe follow him. And maybe we should go to college, follow Omar or sneak into his room, or something.”
“ Sneaking without permission,” Devan says bland. He noticed me rubbing the temples with a worried expression. “ I'm not sure that includes bad behavior that my parents want to get rid of, but they will if they have to.”
“ We can't do it. They'll think I'm crazy, or want revenge, and I've.
Devan raised next to the eyebrows. “ Your Scroll?”
My face was blushing, but I kept talking. “ The point is, they won't trust us. Sounds crazy. And at the very end we can leak it to the traitor, tell them we know.”
Devan looks solid. “ How about Paula? He really likes you. Maybe he can help us.”
I've assumed Paula was too estranged from the witch community to help us, but Devan made me reconsider. Maybe he's right. It would have been nice if someone had supported us, and Paula would have been more trustworthy than me. I had already started nodding my head as Devan continued, “ After all, she is a witch. He knows both, knows various things about..”.
But I didn't hear the follow-up. I felt cold heat at the same time as I remembered Paula in her study, Omar's head bowed near her head as they studied an ancient scroll. What did Paula say at the time? We entered college the same year, and not even his authority stopped us from making friends.
