My first magic lesson was given two days after my arrival. I was sitting in the library, hunched over an old and fragile paper roll explaining, in small handwriting & coiling, the use of the Thorvaldor herb in magic. I was assigned to copy the information over an empty journal, but the process wasn't easy. His handwriting was quite small, and the language was quite old-fashioned, so I felt a headache begin to form between my eyebrows as the door to the corridor opened behind me.
I jumped and almost hit the paper roll with my elbow, which is certain to at least cause some of the paper to crumble into dust. I barely had time to calm down before Paula stood before me.
“ I intended to get Breta, but I thought if I called her into the study a little hard, all my servants were scared into my study, I didn't know why & told her what I needed, it's easier if I do it myself.”
Paula suddenly fell silent waiting, and I realized that I had to respond.
“ You intend to get Breta to..” I said doubt.
“ To call you,” Paula replied as if it was very clear.
“ Oh!” I pushed the chair noisily and stood up as fast as I could. “ Do you need me?”
“ I think we can start your lesson. But we better start in my study . It seems I could be upset if you burn the books here, even if half of them are too old to read.”
After saying so, Paula turned around and walked out of the library without even glancing at her in the slightest to make sure I followed her.
I'm pretty sure this room used to be the master bedroom. However, Paula seemed to be sleeping in another room, as there was no room here to accommodate even a small divan. Books filled a variety of tables & benches, as well as glass tubes, hops & ducks of various sizes, & bowls thick. A dried plant hung from the ceiling, a half-woven loom stood in the corner of the room, and the equipment that seemed to be used to forge silver lay just like that on the table, surrounded by ready-made necklaces and parts that are still cut into pieces.
A large mirror was installed on the north wall, but it was almost impossible to see your reflection there because the surface was covered with many symbols written using red paint.
Two doors open and show a small balcony that can be sure to face a small fortified garden behind the house. The balcony is filled with pots containing herbs & flowers. This room smelled strangely sharp, but it smelled a bit charred as well, as if something was regularly burned here.
“ Log in, log in,” Paula calls from behind one of the tables. He pushed some books off a bench and hinted at me approaching him.
“ Well,” he said as I sat nervously, “ what do you know about magic?”
“ Just know that I have it,” I replied without thinking.
“ Moreover, only knowledge known to everyone.” That's not true, because in the palace I spent a lot of time reading about magic, but I didn't want to give a wrong impression of my knowledge in front of Paula.
