Fake Princess

Fake Princess
CHAPTER 141

I've sacrificed so much to find Bella, crossing dangers I didn't realize I could face before. I put Bella and Devan in danger, and we barely managed to survive. If I get caught now, and let it all go to waste. But Paula accepts me when I'm alone. He believed me when the witch school rejected me. Paula was my friend, my family, and hurt, and I couldn't leave.

“ He definitely wants us to go!” argue Devan.

“ I can't—“, but it's too late. The two men stepped into the second-floor corridor and looked at us.

“ Looks like you were right,” the tall man said to the other man. “ Two sparrows, and a parrot carrying a sword to protect them.”

The second Pri smiled, an ugly creature with a glancing look. “ Come here, sparrows,” call him. “ We won't hurt you—just a little.”

“ Backward!” I shouted, then, while grabbing my magic deeply, attempted to use a spell that allowed me to throw fireballs on the floor near their feet.

I can't do it. The fireball metup-flopped in my hand, then extinguished.

“ You don't look great doing it, do you, sparrows?” The first man wiggled his knife at us while crossing the corridor.

Sighing, I tried again, and this time the fireball lit up between my two hands. I threw it at them, then extended an arm, trying to push Devan and Bella away from the explosion.

The second man grinned again. “ Magic fortress, dear,” the man said. “ Very powerful magic fortress. ‘ The magician there—the man puts his head in the direction of the workspace Paula—‘ his spell is also useless.”

“ Run,” I whispered. Then louder, “ Run!”

Bella and I turned around right then and there, running through the corridor towards the servant stairs. I heard a gasp, a flashing dagger fell to the floor, and as I turned around I saw one of the burly men holding his arm while the other man stared at him in horror. Devan held out a wide grin as he turned around and followed us.

Devan surprises them; it seems they are street thugs and does not expect a noble like Devan to really know how to fight. But they were professionals, and when we arrived at the stairs I heard them chasing. We nearly fell down the stairs as we ran across the corridor and blasted out of the back door into the fortified garden. While running Devan slammed the door, and I heard the door hit one of them. We ran out of the garden door down the alley to the road.

“ Northeast fortress,” I said panting on Devan. “ Which is the fastest way to it?”

“ Follow me,” Devan shouted, and we barged into the middle of the crowd that was moving towards the palace to await the announcement that the princess was already crowned.

I didn't know which men were chasing us were so far behind, so we ran as if they were just a few steps behind us. Just crossing a few blocks had hurt my waist, and I could hear Bella panting beside me. Sweat dripped down the side of my face, and at least once I heard the edges of my dress being torn off. Besides slowing us down in the midst of the masses who flock in the streets.
