Fake Princess
CHAPTER 33
Tonight there are only a few people wandering around Treb. Tomorrow was the day of the Nameless God, and most of the people were preparing a large family meal that they would enjoy at the event. So no one noticed when I knocked on the main door, and after not getting an answer, I slipped towards the back door that led to the living room above the store.
However, when I arrived at the corner of the building I stopped, hearing voices coming from the small garden where Jose's mother planted a plant that Aunt Vania called “ nonsense decoration.” I waited, listened, and then recognized Jose's voice, with Revan & Jerry, two young villagers who were our age. But I still doubt. I'm not very familiar with Revan & Jerry, and I don't want to tell them about my problems.
I almost decided to go home when I heard my name.
“ Finally happened too,” said jose.
“ What, with Amelia?” Either Revan or Jerry. Whoever it was, there was something in his tone that made me gasp.
“ Of course. I told you it won't take long.”
One of them snorted. “ I think it's been long enough,”
Jose's voice sounded annoyed. “ Don't be stupid. He's like a rat. I can't make him run scared. But now..” Jose laughed, and his laughter was not as usual.
“ Now I have got it. You should have seen it when I kissed her. Very soft, very excited. & now won't be long.”
My heart was pounding so hard that I wondered why they didn't hear it.
There was a sound of friction, as if Jose was poking at the person who had just spoken.
“ I told you, don't be stupid. What's the importance of all that if later I can say that I fucked the girl who used to be the princess?”
I can't breathe. The air entered my mouth but it did not seem to reach my lungs, and my legs were suddenly too weak to support my body. I felt my body slump on the shop wall, then reached out to whatever could prevent me from falling. A tendril, filled with purple flowers, grew on the side of the building, and my hand gripped it.
I have a lot of friends, I heard myself telling Devan. But I don't have any friends. Jose just wants to prove that he managed to conquer a princess. I could see Jose's face in my mind, laughing & haughty, & Devan's face, hurt & shaken as I spouted poisonous words at him. I'm the stupid one, now I don't have anyone. No one.
The part of the tendril I was gripping turned into black ash within my hand. For a moment the other part still survived, turning into crumbly black ash, then began to fall like snow. I looked up, shocked and frightened, and then I heard the sound of something burning. When I looked down, the grass around my feet had turned brown and withered. The air around me seemed to warp and turn, filled with heat.Suddenly the feeling, the trapped sensation I had felt in my chest for the past few weeks, was free.
The feeling broke free from my body, rolled around me like a snake as it disappeared into the middle of the night, and hissed the word yes.
Witchcraft. It turned out that what I felt all along was magic, magic that I didn't realize I had.
