I've also been weighing up the idea, but didn't tell Devan. Can I ask the fortune teller to show Diana the way, tell me the name of the city, the name of the street where Diana lived? I don't know why, I don't think it'll be that easy. Forecasts tend not to be that specific, there is usually always room for interpretation.
“ Maybe,” I said, but don't believe it.
We were in the room until the afternoon, pretending to read a journal and writing down fake notes. However, even the charm of the book did not succeed in teasing me. I could feel myself slipping into a dark place, even though Devan was trying to comfort me.
I don't know what I'm doing. Now I have to admit it. I went to Siderros because I had no real idea of finding Diana or revealing the identity of the person with the mantra. What the fuck am I? I can't do it. I'm just a copyist who has magic that can barely be controlled, not a Thorvaldor savior.
It seemed like my mind was fixated on the same path, circling around on its own without finding a new place. I felt heavy, my broken hope weighing on me. Is this what my aunt meant when she said I gave up too easily? Maybe there's something else I can do, but in misery, I can't see it. However, finally my dark mind was interrupted by the sound of someone entering the room.
As it turned out, I realized it a moment later, Brother Axon.
“ The astrologer is willing to meet you, if you want,” that is all he says.
Having no other ideas, I nodded and tried to look excited. We walked through the library and went out. The walls of the fort cast a long shadow under the afternoon light, and some monks and nuns sat on benches laid out in the shade, preparing vegetables for dinner.
As we climbed the low stairs leading to the temple, I wondered what I would tell the astrologer, especially to distract myself from my suddenly limp feet. Would the astrologer have reported it, if I had told him that I was not a noble scientist but rather a girl on a desperate search? And if I do, does he have any information that could help me? Despite the uneasiness that gripped me, I felt a real rush of spirit as we entered.
During the day the light must have radiated right down, but now the light has moved with the sun and only vaguely shone on a rigid figure sitting on a thin mat on the podium.
Brother Axon stopped just a few feet from the door. “ Now I'll leave you. Do you want to be together, or alone?”
“ D—Aldorick can come with me,”.
“ You must approach and kneel,” Brother Axon said. “ Don't talk before he talks to you.”
I nodded, a moment later Brother Axon left, and closed the door slowly.
Devan and I looked at each other, not moving, and suddenly I felt the urge to reach out and grab his hand.
