Fake Princess

Fake Princess
CHAPTER 46

“ Well, easiest to do all things naturally. Well, that's not entirely true. Of course, the easiest thing is to bounce yourself. You know yourself, inside out, even if you don't realize it. Of course, it is the other person, always the other person who makes it difficult, because you don't know them, don't know yourself. Even so, even with yourself, it is easier to do natural things. Things that, in the right situation, can happen on their own.”

“ So turning water into a bird will be difficult, because the water will not turn into a bird by itself. But the water will freeze, if it is cold enough.”

Paula poked the cup with her finger. “ You know, by authority, I should have asked you to start by bouncing yourself. Ask you to change your hair color or speak in a language I don't know. But I think you're up for a challenge, so try this. Try freezing the water. Look at the water, & ask to freeze.”

Part of me wanted to protest that I wasn't ready, that I didn't know what I was doing. I remember how it felt for the plant vine to turn into ashes in my hands, and it scared me. But, the other part of me felt a surge of spirit, challenged. This is something that could be mine alone, something that would not remind me of my old life.

I glared at the cup . Freezing, insinuation. Freeze. But nothing happened. I glanced at Paula, but she just stared back at me without commenting. I looked away at the cup again. Since thinking about the word didn't help, I had to try something else. Butwhat? Paula did not explain how to do it specifically. I glared at the cup, and still nothing happened.

I could feel my shoulders starting to tense from frustration. Outside, the wind blew away the plants on the balcony, and I realized that the workspace was stuffy. The fire inside the fireplace was left burning too hot for late spring, and a few strands of hair that had slipped out of the braid felt sticky on my nape.

My eyes, which had been jolting since then, jolted towards the cup. While thinking about the winter, snow, & ice cracking in my mind, I pointed at the chalice. There was a slow clanking sound, the sound of something hitting the metal. When I lowered my hand, suddenly feeling tired, I saw that the cup was covered in tiny frozen crystals.

With a smile, Paula picked up a piece of cloth, wrapped around her hand, and picked up the chalice.

“ Totally frozen,” the thrill. “ I think there is not a drop of liquid in it, & it is better than my first experiment.. You know, on the edge there is still a little water.”.

Paula lowered the cup, then said in a serious tone again, “ & now you how does it feel to be able to control your magic. Remember that, I don't want you scorching my things when you're upset. Well, if you're not too tired, we'll talk about other transformations.”
