The space was small, in the city only the nobility had room to build a spacious garden. With a high stone wall around it, the garden consists of fountains & circular paths, herbs & flowers growing near its walls. The balcony above was filled with more life, but this place still felt comfortable. Since then I leaned on the edge of the stone pool that felt warm, and jerked up with a hard moment until my right shoulder was in pain from being hit. With watery eyes I said, “ Why do you think so?”
“ She said,” She knows I see you often. He wants to meet you.
I rubbed my shoulders. It occurred to me to ask Devan if my body was bleeding from a rock swipe, but I just gritted my teeth.
“ What? Does he expect you'll take him to see me?”
From the bench he was sitting on, Devan shifted his legs on the ground, then said, “ I think so.”
I felt my cheeks hot right at the moment when my spine seemed to turn into a grain of ice. I don't want to meet Diana, don't want to be closer to her. I don't care if she's the princess, no matter if she has the right to ask me to dance with a goat in front of the entire G district if she wants to. I just know I don't want to see the girl whose life I lived until last season. I'd better go back to Treb crawling on my hands and knees in the rain without a coat.
But I was once him. The part of me that dissidents want to see, see the real princess, something I should have. To see what he's doing with the life that used to be mine and that scares me, because I know what I'm gonna find. I've caught a glimpse of him as he got off the carriage to greet the king & queen.
She's a princess. The princess is real, very graceful, her movements smooth, and her laughter warm. Something that, with a petite, shy, & awkward body, I never had. Seeing it would force me to admit it, more than I've felt now.
“ Well,” I said while standing, both hands on the hips, “ You have to tell him you don't want to do it. Telling him it can't be done.”
Devan crossed his arms, his face revealing a stubborn expression. “ You know I can't do it, Amelia. She's princess. One day she will be queen. If he asks, I should do it.”
“ We are not talking about who has the right to spend the last slice of spice cake on the plate! You know I should drop her off if she asks.”
I know, but I don't want to hear it. “ Good ! Do whatever Diana wants. Bring him here. But don't be surprised if I don't open the door !”
After saying it, I rushed out of the garden, then slammed the door shut. From the window I saw Devan moving towards the door, then stopped. Slowly, he turned around and exited through the garden door, the door leading to an alleyway that connected to the main road.
“ What does it do?”
I quickly turned around, surprised. I completely dissolved in my own mind so unaware Paula was standing in the doorway of one of the sitting rooms.
“ Sorry?”
“ Well, in my experience, usually men who act a lot & cause most problems in romantic relationships,” Paula said. “ So, of course, I suspect your male friend has done or said something that makes you miss in like a windstorm. Is my guess right?”
