Fake Princess

Fake Princess
CHAPTER 155

“ So I think your parents should let you marry me. Not now—many things to do, with Bella, Paula, and magic—but someday that's not too far from now. Anyway I saved Thorvaldor, and I hope Bella will pay me properly in return for my years of knowledge. He even threatened to give me the title—he must be very happy to tease everyone with my status as a commoner. And I guess, if they object, you better be—“

“ Break off relationship with them?” ask Devan. He tried seriously, but one corner of his mouth kept twitching.

“ Good, yes,” I admit.

“ I have done it,” Devan said, and my mouth was tense. “ Or at least I threatened to do so, if they did not give their blessing.”

A thin frown formed between his eyebrows, and his smile faded slightly. “ I think they knew it was going to happen, but my father was still unhappy. He was grumpy talking about obligations, and for a moment I thought I really should do it.”

The frown deepened, Devan turned away from me. “ That's scary. I've chosen it—until now still—but in reality it must be. it's hard. You're not the only one trained in one thing; I don't know if I know how to be anything other than the next Earl of Rithia candidate. I had to convince myself I could do it, be someone else if they kicked me out, but I didn't want to part from them. I can do it, but I don't want.”

My heart was slightly twisted, as it looked at the twinkle of tension around Devan's eyes.

Suddenly, a small grin appeared again in his mouth. “ But after that my father began to think about his benefits if I married someone who has been very meritorious towards the future queen. After that, he gave his blessing with pleasure.”

I shook my head as if to confirm it. I came here to ask Devan to do it, but hearing him talk to his parents feels like a dream. “ You really told them that you want to marry me?”

Now that smile had already taken over his entire face. “ I told you; I was subjugated by your spell even before you had magic power, before you saved a kingdom, when you couldn't possibly be allowed to marry me. Nothing has really changed since then, unless our children can become witches too, and you'll obviously be outnumbered.

“So, yes, I want to marry you. Someday. If you want to accept me,” Devan said humbly.

“ Of course I want, you fool,” I said while screaming, and scattering into his arms. However, some things never change, no matter how many countries you have saved. I stumbled at the last moment, and we both fell down laughing. It didn't prevent me from kissing her for very long until we were gasping for breath when the kiss ended.

“ Amelia,” I said without being haunted by any old memories, or something already lost, or regrets. “ Only Amelia. But I also like the last one.”

Devan reached out and slipped a loose strand of my hair behind the ear. “ I think the one I like the most is also Amelia,” Devan said.

We stood up and, still laughing, cleaned up the grass and twigs that stuck to our clothes. Then, embracing her, we started walking to Paula's house to tell her that her copyist had just gotten a new job and they got engaged the same afternoon. I looked up at the hill once, towards the palace, then turned away. I'll visit that place tomorrow, but now it doesn't matter. Today I just need to walk with Devan, to visit Paula, to be myself. This time, for the first time it was enough.
