I feel limp. Strange how quickly things can change. That morning I was confused, unsure of my way of life. But now I have a path, a way to do the skills that have been taught to me, to help Thorvaldor. “ I can come now,” I said. “ Currently Paula doesn't need me. I can tell him about our conversation and—“
However, Bella just shook her head. “ Don't. There's something we have to do now.”
I shook my head at him. “ No, no.”
Bella looked at me with an expression that said, with all my knowledge equal to that of a princess, I was really and really very stupid. “ He is waiting for you,”.
My heart is a little bit of a jump. “ Devan?”
“ Who else?” grunts Bella.
I think of Devan often; he always interrupts my thoughts, even my grief over Riana's death. But I haven't seen him, not since the coronation. Maybe I was right, when Devan never showed up in front of Paula's house I started to assume that she had given up.
“ Are you still worried about the opinions of her parents? Now you're the princess' main advisor,” ledek Bella. “ You can hold your head up high in any room in the country. But if you're worried about that, I think I can give you a title..”.
I laughed without intending to do so, shaking my head. “ No, no,”. Then, more seriously; “ I don't think I'm worried about that anymore. I saved this country, didn't I? Surely it has its own meaning.” But then the doubt slipped again. “ But he never came,” I said grimly.
Bella put her hand on the gate, as if to leave, but then turned around and sighed. “ He lets you make a decision, because that's the only way you can truly accept it. This time,” said Bella, “ you have to go to him.”
Devan stood on his back, as if he were observing a very complicated flower grove. However, she did not move as the crackling pebbles stepped on my feet, and I realized she was not observing the flowers at all.
Even so, Devan did not jump in shock as I patted her on the shoulder and said, “ I came.”
Devan turned around slowly, one arm twitching like he wanted to hug me. However, he did not move.
“ Sorry I needed this time,”. “ But I have much to think about, and I don't know...
Devan is waiting.
I exhaled impatiently. “ Knows not, he made me his counselor. I must help her learn to be queen, to be the voice that whispers advice behind her throne. Then he'll help me open a magic school.”
Devan just looked at me, not helping at all.
I moved on the spot, scowling at him. In the past, maybe I would have given up on the anxiety that had haunted me since that first kiss. That Devan once loved me, but decided too much trouble. That she was so angry because of the spell I cast on her that she couldn't forgive me. That our position was so different that his family would never allow us to be together. I probably gave up when faced with the doubts that bothered me as she continued to stare at me so tenaciously. Maybe I'll blush and sneak away, instead of standing straight in front of him. Back then, when I left my life without a fight. But not now. Now I am stronger, more courageous. I had faced my greatest fear, and survived.
