I remembered how the magician campus only accepted the nobility and the people moneyed. I remembered how the king and queen had chosen a commoner girl to replace the princess, ready to sacrifice her without asking for her permission. I remembered their gift to Aunt Vania, who was well-intentioned, but not really helpful, because it was given without understanding the real circumstances.
When I was a princess I never noticed this kind of thing. Oh, I once supported the poor on certain festive days, I also felt concerned about the fate of the people living in the TC district. But it didn't really touch me. And I never worry about people who may not be hungry but also not really alive. But now I have seen the difference between the kingdom and the people the kingdom should serve. I've, you could say, lived in the gap that the two produced.
I shook my head, as calm as someone with a shadow. Finally, Bella banged her head back and laughed. “ Does not mean diamond, soft bed, and banquet is not enough to be an excuse.”
“ Of course,” I agreed to it while laughing.
After that, the situation between us became a little more relaxed. We were on a similar mission and, I guess, started learning to like each other during the process.
Even by avoiding the highway, we arrived at Vivaskari at the end of the second day, just as the sunset painted the city fortress visible in the distance in orange and yellow. Devan went straight to a rented inn and stables just outside the fort, while me and Bella waited in a thatched barn on the edge of one of the last farms. Although Melani knew Devan was coming to look for me, Devan's arrest would be the most troublesome, since he was the son of an Earl.
“ Don't worry about him,” Bella said after we waited a while. He was slouched on the floor, his back leaning against the wall of the thatched barn. The horses stood exhausted behind the shadow of the barn, not a single one intending to wander. “ He will observe the circumstances, then come back again.”
Bella's dark eyes sparkled under the dim light. “ For two years, hmm? And whose bed are you going to choose for two years?”
My cheeks feel burning. I realized that Bella had tajama observation, a way of observing things when you thought she was paying attention to something else, a great ability, for a queen. “Not like that,” mumbled.
Bella raised both her eyebrows. “ Why not? He's taking care of you, Amelia. It's like you're his best treasure, but he doesn't know how to put you in his pocket. Was the dagger-throwing man brave enough to reveal it?”
“ Ever, one time,”. “ Right after Melani sent a storm to kill me. Devan asked me not to go looking for you. She's scared— well, afraid I'm caught, or hurt. I told him I had to make an effort, and I cast a spell so he wouldn't divulge our secrets. He kissed me, then left. Then the king got sick, and I went looking for you.”
