Fake Princess

Fake Princess
CHAPTERS. 143

Footsteps in boots echoed in the street as Melanim's men saw us standing there. They speed up the pace. “ Log in, log in,” I shouted, and we quickly went in turns. Devan slammed it shut as I looked around in panic, expecting someone to see us fall into the palace garden and call the guards. Yet today no one is taking a walk; everyone is inside, waiting for the coronation to begin.

“ They can also come in,” Devan said as he pulled the sword out of its sheath. “ You two, go! I'll hold them—“

However Bella only took one step back away from the door, and, with the retreat of royal blood and royal sentences, the door disappeared and left only a plain wall.

I exhaled the breath I had been holding right along with Devan and Bella. We looked at each other, and there, in the middle of the palace garden, we started laughing.

But we couldn't laugh for long. When our giggling had disappeared, I observed the garden while biting my lips, thinking.

“ Will they make it in?” Bella asked Devan who shook her head.

“ I don't think I can. Her coronation is about to begin, maybe even already, and Melani makes sure no freaks can get in. Unfortunately for Melani, that includes her back. I think we're safe.”

Bella grunts. “ Of course. Very safe.”

I ignored them. In my mind I was walking down the corridors of the palace, deciding which corridor could take us to the Hall of Thorvaldor as best I could without drawing attention. I had to get rid of the memories that threatened to overwhelm me; the scent of the garden in summer, the sunlight that shone on the palace buildings. I can't sneak back on all those feelings, longing for things that have passed. I had to focus, but it was hard, because I was so tired and scared.

The bell started ringing somewhere in the palace. The coronation will begin soon.

“ So that's our plan?” ask Bella. “ Just log in and tell them?”

I nodded while raising my shoulders. “ I have no other ideas. We just need to get into the hall and advance to the front row. We should be able to deliver enough so they want to hear.”

“ When you say it,” timbrung Devan, “ just make sure they know that Riana has nothing to do with all this. Riana did not know. The last thing we want is people attacking him or something.”

“ Agree.” I sighed deeply, but it did not manage to calm me down as I expected. “ Come.”

Devan heard the bells, we took the fastest path. The exact same route, I realized, with the one I was on with Ronald the day they told me who I really was. However, now that no nobles were walking in the corridor, no servants rushed to carry out their duties. Everyone was in the Hall of Thorvaldor or the banquet hall, preparing themselves for the celebration to be carried out after the coronation.

However, two guards stood in front of one of the side doors leading into the hall, as usual. One of them held out an arm as we approached, but Devan slipped into the front of our group with ease. “ You won't tell my dad that we're late, kam?” Devan asked with a sorry smile.
