"You didn't see Andrew, ..." Mom stopped by my office that afternoon with a question I had already guessed where it was going.
"Tomorrow, I sent him a message. I have a job today. She's okay anyway."
Mom sat in front of me and looked straight ahead of me. I knew this would be a difficult conversation later.
"Why don't you consider Andrew's proposal?"
"I've got Mom's boyfriend, we love each other. I think Andrew is like a brother. How can I accept his proposal."
"I heard from Laura. You're leaving Canada?"
"Yes maybe..."
"Albert still needs you here. You all go, Laura also often spends months in Europe. You're going to the US..." Now he says his objection.
"Mom, DC is only an hour and a half away, I can still get back here. I won't move now either. Still a long time, there are still a lot of problems we haven't solved."
"You're your father's mistress in the party, Albert in the company, you've also helped him with some work. Are you sure you can leave Canada? All your work is here." I let out a breath.
"Not now Mom. I'm not leaving now. Still a long time, at least wait for our business in the USA more developed. And Gilbert is developing our investment there."
"But you're finally going to go." He looked at me with a clear look. "It seems that when Mom is not around, none of Mom's daughters are around Mom. Laura moved continents and you moved countries." Mom put sadness on her face. This conversation really cornered me.
"Mom, why are you making this conversation. You want to separate us and match me with Andrew. I just picked Andrew up even family friends. You think I can marry someone I consider a friend."
"He did everything for you even dares to receive a bullet for you. Why don't you see that one bit."
Mama hush.
"What Mama said, was that you shouldn't have died in Canada. You sacrificed your family to be with him."
"And Mom wants me to throw away my feelings and listen to you. Do you think I have no feelings. You can arrange a marriage with someone I don't love. I'm doing everything for this family, but you're asking for too much now." Now I stand up from my seat.
"Mama didn't mean that. Mama just wants you to consider it." Now Mama is back.
"I considered everything, even Gillian and I waited until she could prove we could grow our investments in the US. The U. S. has a much bigger market than ours, why Mama and Albert don't see him setting things up for us, if I could tell him there wasn't him we wouldn't be able to gather here. Can I ask Mama to consider that right now."
Mama can't answer me anymore. I'm backing out too.
I took my bag. It's as bad as it feels here. This weekend I'd better go. I miss Gilbert, we haven't seen each other in a long time, so I'd better go to DC on the last flight I can get this afternoon.
"Where are you going?" Mom stood up to see me cleaning my bag.
"I'm going to go Mom."
"Where?"
"To Washington DC, to see my girlfriend. I'm tired of you guys pushing me like this."
Mom could only be silent watching me leave.
